Highlights from Entreleadership Master Series (EMS)
Entreleadership Master Series is targeted at serious business people. People who view their businesses as vehicles through which they create jobs, where people thrive, profits are made and economies are changed. It is not for dabblers. It covered the entire gamut of running your organisation from the dream, to your vision, mission statements and goals. Time management, getting the best out of your team, to hiring the right people and keeping them, to how to choose and keep the best partners for your business, to sales, marketing, and record keeping/what to look out for in agreements that your company enters into. It was amazing! Even John Maxwell says “if you’re serious about taking your business to the next level, then you can’t afford to miss Dave Ramsey’s life-changing Entreleadership event!”
This is the second part of a 3 part series, read about my Entreleadership Experience here. In this second part, we get down to brass tacks and actually look at some of the things I learnt that may be helpful for your business, your job (employpreneurship remember? See part 1) and even your relationships.
-I am the vessel. It means that I am the problem with my organisation. I am also the solution to my organisation’s problem. (This struck a nerve, as an entrepreneur, it’s easy to get comfortable after a few successes and then you start to wonder why your organisation isn’t growing as it should. The truth is that you are the problem, the other truth is that you are also the solution so…)
– Lift the Leadership Lid. No organisation can grow beyond its leaders, so you need to grow, invest in yourself by reading and learning, and surrounding yourself with people who have been down the road you are on and succeeded so you can learn from them.
– You hired and kept them- if your team sucks, get you a mirror. Are you communicating clearly- “this is who we are”, “this is why we do what we do.” Are your people sold on your vision, do they know the “why” behind what you do? IN BUSINESS, WHAT YOU ARE NOT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU ARE.
– This is important because people who believe what you believe will take your cause and make it your own. That’s why Martin Luther King had an “I have a dream” speech, not an “I have a plan” speech. You sell a vision and if you’ve hired the right people and trained them well, then you have people who can run with it.
-Leadership is always moving dreams out of the clouds and bringing it into clear steps. But you if you set a goal before you dream, the goals lack energy and do not energize you or your team.
–ACTIVITY CREATES INCOME. It’s a cause and effect thing. (This really got me thinking, maybe it’s not the line of business you are in that is bad, maybe it’s the fact that you are not making those calls, not following up, not engaged in enough income generating activity that is making it look bad?)
– If you manage the correct activity on your list, you don’t have to manage the result. To increase your income, do the things that allow you make money.
– Time management and the sin of losing time. Assign the task. That brings us to the all-important issue of delegation. Budding entrepreneurs refuse to delegate because they think others won’t do it as well as they would. Being the “doer” keeps you working “in” your business and not “on” it- meaning you are putting out fires rather than determining strategy and causing change.
– NO is a complete sentence. (I loved this. If you see an email from me that says “NO” in response to your 4 paragraphs, know it’s because I took this to heart. As a leader, you have to always think “what is the best use of my time? What am I doing that someone else can do? Delegate that, so that you can do the things that only you can).
-About delegation- Great leaders teach, guide and repeat. YOU NEED TO PUT WOOD IN A STOVE BEFORE YOU CAN EXPECT HEAT TO COME OUT OF IT.
-Be intentional with your communication. At the root of every problem, you have a person. And if you have hired good people on your team, they are probably not performing as well as they should because you have not defined for them in writing what success looks like in your organisation, and for that position.
-Hiring and keeping great people is something most entrepreneurs complain about, so I’ll spend a bit of time on that. You want thoroughbreds in your organisation. 95% of having thoroughbreds happens before they are employed:
* You are not looking for the best players, you are looking for the right ones. (Have you watched the movie “The Internship” Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. I loved how google was portrayed as seeking its staff- they checked if they had ‘googliness”, so it’s not about being the smartest, brightest, it’s- are you a go-getter, and a go-giver? Will you play fair? Will everyone in the team matter or will you be toxic?) You pick out the traits you want your organisation to have and then look for thoroughbreds that possess those traits or look like they are teachable and can develop them.
*You need to have the right person on the right seat in the bus.
*With teach-ability, if it wasn’t in writing then it wasn’t agreed. So get the new hire to know in written terms what success for that position looks like. Does it mean you generate X amount of sales? Create X amount of material? They study it, make an input, if they think the bar has been set too low, they say I can do more, and both employer and employee then sign. It is after this that you have truly communicated roles and what is expected of the team member to that person. Because it is agreed upon, it also allows that team member self-check and creates and objective basis for later appraisals. Dave calls these the KEY RESULT AREAS, so that team member knows that it is in those areas that results matter, if you get all stars in other areas but your KRAs, you have not succeeded.
*People matter, if people don’t matter, you’ll never grow a culture of excellence.
*People are waiting for leadership to lead, so don’t be a spineless leader. You own/lead the place, so act like it.
*And one of my favourite quotes from Dave on this is “YOUR RAISE IS EFFECTIVE WHEN YOU ARE”. You need to be growing or going.
– Communication is not one of those things you can over-do. People automatically assume the worst when they don’t know what’s going on.
– Continuously share the story of your company- ‘this is where we started from, this is what we did to get here and this is where we are going”, so that everyone in your company knows where they fit, in the vision. Like is inscribed on the British #2 coin, everyone should know that they are “standing on the shoulders of giants” and should participate in such a way that they become giants on whose shoulders others will stand.
All of these are little nuggets from just the first few sessions of a 6 day course.
